The development of the 997 began in 1999 and took five years to perfect the design, as they insisted on total satisfaction. The 997 featured notable changes that set it apart from its predecessor. It was given a new styling and just a touch more power. The 997 was technically similar to the 996, but it was intended to signal a gradual departure.
 
The 997 set itself apart from its predecessor by the steeper, round clear-glass headlights, marking a return to an important style element of the older 911 models.
